Women and Equalities Select Committee
The Women and Equalities House of Commons Select Committee has published a document reporting that Muslim employees – especially Muslim women – are subjected to employment inequalities.
The Select Committee has found that, when compared to other religious and ethnic groups, the highest levels of unemployment are amongst Muslims. Worryingly, the report also concludes that in particular, Muslim women suffer from inequality, discrimination and Islamophobia when searching for work and also once in work.
The report makes 19 recommendations with the aim of tackling the issues highlighted, including:-
- Directly addressing Islamophobia in the workplace;
- Widening access to university including the introduction of Sharia-compliant ethical student loans and specialist careers advice;
- Programmes for Jobcentre Plus;
- Raising awareness of free childcare provision.
The Select Committee recommends that a plan should be put in place by the Government by the end of this year, containing objectives that can be measured to tackle the disadvantages highlighted.
