Welsh victims of contaminated blood scandal “still waiting for equal payments”
More than a year after Wales health minister Vaughan Gethring said he wanted the matter to be resolved, contaminated blood victims in Wales are still waiting for a rise in support payments.
Charity The Haemophilia Society has written to the health minister urging him to end the disparity where victims in Wales can receive £14,000 less than those in England.
The charity went on to say “People infected in Wales are being penalised.”
The Welsh Government have said they were working with other devolved administrations to “achieve parity”.
The Haemophilia Society’s Clive Smith said victims had suffered “years of neglect” and Wales’ victims received less than those from elsewhere. He said “The contaminated blood scandal happened before devolution and we believe the Westminster government has a moral duty to help to close this gap.
“However, the governments in Scotland and Northern Ireland have managed to fund increases in financial support.”
Patients in Wales had lost in a “geographical lottery”.
