Waiting list for NHS operations in England highest since 2007
Recent figures have shown the number of patients waiting for an operation on the NHS in England is at its highest for over ten years.
The figures also showed increasing numbers of patients waiting for more than the targeted treatment time of 18 weeks.
General secretary of the Royal College of Nursing Janet Davies, said “Cancelling non-urgent care may have helped the NHS fight through one of the worst winters in recent memory, but patients in need of elective surgery should not have to pay the price for chronic staff shortages and years of underfunding.”
NHS Providers’ Phillippa Hentsch, said the increasing numbers were “worrying”, adding that they showed that there was a need for “substantial” resources to be committed to in the funding settlement that has been promised by the prime minister.
