UK pledges £500m to global coronavirus vaccine-sharing scheme

The UK is to pledge £500m to a new global vaccine-sharing scheme which has been designed to ensure the fair distribution of treatments for Covid-19.

Prime minister Boris Johnson made the announcement during a speech to the United Nations general assembly, and called on world leaders to overcome their differences as he set out plans to prevent future pandemics.

The plan, which has been developed with The Wellcome Trust and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has been put in place to help stop future pandemics. Proposals include developing a global network of “zoonotic hubs” to locate dangerous pathogens before they are transferred from animals to humans, as well as improving manufacturing capacity for vaccines and treatments.

The prime minister, in a pre-recorded speech, said “After nine months of fighting Covid, the very notion of the international community looks tattered. We know that we cannot continue in this way. Unless we unite and turn our fire against our common foe, we know that everyone will lose.”

The prime minister also pledged £340m to the World Health Organisation over the next four years, an increase of 30 per cent on the previous period, making the UK one of its biggest donors.
