UK obesity crisis fuels diabetes epidemic
An audit by Diabetes UK has revealed that the number of diabetes patients has recently soared to record levels and cases have risen by seven per cent in the last twelve months alone.
Approximately 90 per cent of patients have the Type 2 form of diabetes, which is linked to a lack of exercise and poor diet, both of which can lead to obesity.
Increasing levels of Type 2 cases of meant a doubling in diagnoses in the last decade and a further 12.3 million people in the UK are at risk of developing the condition.
Nikki Joule from Diabetes UK said “Type 2 diabetes and its complications are extremely serious, and the main driver behind the rise is obesity. We need to encourage healthy living by providing clear and easy to understand nutritional information about the products we are all buying, and especially foods high in fat, salt and sugar.
“We are urging the industry to show they are serious about fighting obesity and helping customers make healthier decisions.
“We want them to ensure that information about the nutritional contents of food consumers buy in restaurants, cafes and takeaways is easily accessible and understandable.”
