Type-2 diabetes patients to be offered radical diet treatment
In an effort to reverse the condition of type 2 diabetes patients in England, the NHS is to offer thousands of people with the condition a low calorie diet, restricting them to 800 calories a day for three months.
Currently, around 10 per cent of the health service’s budget is spent on treating diabetes in England and nine out of ten of these patients have the type 2 variant, which has a clear link to lifestyle and diet.
Under the new trial, it is expected that around 5,000 patients will initially be prescribed the treatment, together with follow-up support.
NHS England’s national clinical director for diabetes and obesity Professor Jonathan Valabhji, recently acknowledged that the diet would not suit everyone and that it was challenging.
He went on to say “But we think it is worth exploring the implementation of these programmes within the NHS so that those who could benefit, can benefit.”
There are currently around two-thirds of adults and one-third of children amongst the UK population, who are currently overweight or obese, which is increasing the rates of the condition.
