Study warns women have a 20 per cent increased risk of dying within five years of their first heart attack than men
Researchers in Canada have concluded that women are 20 per cent more likely to die in the first five years following their first heart attack than men.
For the research, 45,064 patients who had been hospitalised after their first heart attack were studied and monitored for around six years. The team found that on average, women received poorer treatment than men, with less medication prescribed, surgeries performed and specialist consultants.
Heart attacks come in two forms – a life-threatening form, known as an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and a less severe form called non-STEMI, which is more common.
During the study, the team found that the development of heart failure following a STEMI or non-STEMI – whether in hospital or following discharge – remains higher for women than for men, with women specifically 9.4 per cent more likely to die in hospital following a STEMI and 4.5 per cent following a non-STEMI, compared to 4.7 per cent and 2.9 per cent for men.
Dr Padma Kaul of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, said “We need to be vigilant, pay attention to our own biases and to those most vulnerable to ensure that we have done everything possible in providing the best treatment.”
