Study reveals gastric bypass procedure can cure type-2 diabetes
Campaigners are urging the NHS to make gastric bypasses more widely available, following a study that found the procedure had reversed type 2 diabetes in three quarters of patients.
A quarter of British adults are obese and over three million people have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which can lead to blindness, leg amputations, heart disease and stroke, if left untreated.
The study which was undertaken by scientists at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, looked at over 1,999 patients who had had a gastric bypass between 2006 and 2015. 73 per cent of the patients were free of the condition for at least five years following the procedure.
Diabetes UK’s Dr Emily Burns, said “The lack of bariatric surgery services in the UK means very few people can actually access this treatment and have the opportunity to put their type 2 diabetes into remission.
“Even though not everyone who qualifies for bariatric surgery will want it, we believe the option should be there for those who do.”
Type 2 diabetes is increasing in the UK as people live less active lives and consume more junk food. Obesity is a major cause of the condition, which, if left untreated, can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness and leg amputations.
