Study finds two servings of yoghurt each week lowers risk of pre-cancerous bowel growth in men by 20%
Researchers have found that men who ate two or more servings of yoghurt each week reduced their risk of developing adenoma growths by nearly 20 per cent, and were also 26 per cent less likely to develop growths that had a high risk of becoming cancerous.
The research team at Washington University School of Medicine state that the findings back up research that suggests eating yoghurt may reduce the risk of developing bowel cancer by changing the volume and type of bacteria in the gut.
Adenomas, also known as adenomatous polyps are abnormal growths that develop in the lining of the rectum or colon. They are precancerous, which means that if they remain untreated, they can become malignant.
The research involved studying the diets and development of the growths among 32,600 men from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and 55,700 women from the Nurses’ Health Study.
All participants had undergone lower bowel endoscopies in the years between 1085 and 2012, and had reported on their diets every four years, which included how much yoghurt they had eaten.
Over the course of the study period, 5,800 adenomas developed in the men and 8,100 in the women.
The researchers found no link between eating yoghurt and the development of adenomas in women.
