Scottish nursing union ‘in dispute’ over NHS pay deal
The Royal College of Nursing in Scotland has lodged a formal trade dispute with the Scottish government for the first time in a disagreement over pay.
The union said staff were exhausted, and that worrying numbers were considering leaving the profession.
Last month, the Scottish government confirmed an NHS pay deal that would see most of its workers receiving a 4 per cent pay rise. The RCN said the single-year deal was imposed despite its rejection, saying the deal fell “far short” of the RCN’s call for a significant pay rise that applies across all bands equally.
In a letter to the Scottish health secretary, Julie Lamberth of the RCN said that members had “serious concerns” about retention and recruitment of the nursing workforce in Scotland.
“The Scottish government has relied on the goodwill of nursing staff for too long.
“Every patient needs and deserves the best quality of care, this can only be safely achieved with the right number of nursing staff with the right skills and expertise.”
