Scientists develop ‘virtual tumour’ as new way to see cancer
Scientists at Cambridge University have developed a virtual reality model of a cancer tumour, providing a new way to view the disease, and researchers have said it could increase our awareness of cancer and assist in the search for new treatments.
The venture is part of an international research scheme and the system will allow multiple users to examine the tumour from anywhere in the world.
Director of Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK), Professor Greg Hannon, said “No-one has examined the geography of a tumour in this level of detail before, it is a new way of looking at cancer.”
Chief scientist of the Institute Professor Karen Vousden, said “Understanding how cancer cells interact with each other and with healthy tissue is critical if we are going to develop new therapies – looking at tumours using this new system is so much more dynamic than the static 2D versions we are used to.”
