Royal College of Midwives launches new guidance for midwifery care in labour
New guidance has been launched by the RCM entitled ‘Midwifery care in labour guidance for all women in all settings’.
The guide details recommendations for the care of women during labour and birth, covering topics including fetal heart rate assessment, eating and drinking during labour, and avoiding severe genital trauma. It also covers suggestions for practice and good practice points.
Recommendations included in the guidance are:
•That midwives talk to women about how they can change their birthing room to accommodate their needs;
•That midwives advise women that upright positions during the second stage of labour could reduce the possibility of interventions such as episiotomies, instrumental births, and fetal heart pattern concerns;
•That key information for epidural anaesthesia should include potential side effects and benefits, and that the information should be supported by audio visual or written materials.
