Rise in worldwide cancer cases
A report published by The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) predicts that there will be 18.1 million new cancer cases and 9.6 million people will succumb to the disease this year worldwide.
The rates have increased from 14.1 million cases and 8.2 million deaths in 2012.
The figures, which are partly due to an ageing population, suggest that one in five men and one in six women will develop the disease of the course of their lifetime.
The report also suggests that female breast cancer, bowel cancer and lung cancer are responsible for a third of all cancer cases and worldwide deaths.
The worst hit countries include New Zealand, Hungary, Denmark, the USA and China.
The report estimates that overall, nearly 50 per cent of all cases and deaths in the world this year will occur in Asia, mostly due to the large numbers of people living in the continent and some cancers with higher death rates are more common in this part of the world.
The report authors say there is “extraordinary diversity” in cancer types and illness patterns around the world, and countries need to consider how they will try to prevent and treat cancer going forward.
