Review into Shropshire baby deaths ‘not watered down’
Donna Ockenden, a senior midwife who is conducting a review into failings in maternity care at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, has written to reassure parents over concerns that the inquiry was being ‘watered down’.
Parents had objected to the scrutiny panel including the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) over questions about its recent history at the health trust.
In her letter, Ms Ockenden said she wished to “provide reassurance”, after a number of families had contacted her with concerns. She informed them that the review team had been extended and now included over twenty experienced doctors and midwives, of whom none had worked previously for the trust and would “therefore bring completely independent insight”.
She said that “good progress” was being made, with a large number documents being considered, and over 50 families being met face to face.
She went on to say that the review’s “completion is likely to be the end of the year” and that families would be kept informed.
She added “We are acutely aware that many families have waited a very long time to receive answers relating to their individual cases, and that many families have suffered terribly over many years.
“It is therefore so important that the maternity review team is given the time needed to undertake this vitally important piece of work.”
