Report warns health of UK children falling behind those in other wealthy countries
According to a report by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the health of British children is falling behind other wealthy countries and is worsening in the poorest areas.
Death rates for infants under the age of one, obesity levels and vaccination rates have either stalled in improvements or worsened, and children living in deprived areas suffer health up to four times more than from more advantaged background.
Authors of the report say they fear the government are in danger of ‘failing a generation’ if changes are not made.
Professor Russell Viner, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said “On many vital measures, we risk lagging behind other European countries, we’re in danger of failing a generation if we don’t turn this situation around.
“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us if we’re to get a grip on the state of child health in the UK.
“This report is the only one of its kind to zoom out and look at the full picture and it’s not a pretty sight. On many vital measures we risk lagging behind other European countries.”
