Reducing calories can arrest type-2 diabetes for at least two years
A study conducted under a GP-led programme has found that by consuming 850 calories a day for three months and keeping the weight off, patients are able to arrest type-2 diabetes for at least a further two years.
The study has built on earlier evidence which suggests that weight loss is a key solution, meaning less reliance on medication than previously thought.
Type-2 diabetes currently affects one in 16 adults in the UK. It causes uncontrolled levels of sugar, which can lead to serious complications, such as visual problems, heart disease and amputations.
One of the trial investigators, Professor Roy Taylor of Newcastle University, said “These results are a significant development and finally pull down the curtain on the era of type-2 diabetes as an inevitably progressive disease.”
However, Dr Nicola Guess of King’s College London, said there was more to the disease than a need for weight loss.
“Type-2 diabetes returned in a minority of people (16%) who kept off 15kg or more for two years.
“Further research is needed to help us understand why this is.
“It is possible that these people had type-2 diabetes for longer before losing weight or perhaps there might be dietary or genetic factors which contributed.”
Diabetes UK, who funded the study, said the findings were encouraging, but added “We know type-2 diabetes is a complex condition and this approach will not work for everyone.”
