Red flag sepsis signs to look out for
Currently, around 44,000 people in the UK die each year from sepsis and internationally someone dies every 3.5 seconds. The condition is triggered when the body reacts to an infection by attacking its own tissues and organs.
Symptoms include:
Significant shivering or muscle pain
Inability to pass urine
Confusion or slurred speech
Mottled or discoloured skin.
In addition to the above, children can exhibit the following symptoms:
A rash that does not fade when pressed
Faster breathing rate
Convulsions or fits
Lethargy
Feeling extremely cold.
Sepsis can be contracted by anyone but occurs most often in people who have recently undergone surgery or have stayed in hospital for an extended period of time.
Other people at risk are the elderly and very young, chemotherapy patients or people with weak immune systems.
