Probiotic supplement could do wonders for osteoporosis patients
A new study has found that a widely-used probiotic supplement can help to increase bone volume and formation.
Historical studies have shown that the supplements can assist in protection against bone loss, but their effects on bone health have until now remained unclear.
This new study, which involved the use of mice which were treated with the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, which exists naturally inside the body and is found in the intestine. It found that a chain reaction was created, which ended in the seretion of a protein which is critical for the development of bones.
The research team, from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, state that these findings could mean that probiotics become a more affordable and accessible treatment for bone disease sufferers, such as osteoporosis.
The authors of the study say that most cases of the disease are treated ineffectively due to the side effects and prohibitive cost of drugs on the market.
Senior author Dr Roberto Pacifici, said “Because (probiotics’) mechanism of action in bone is unknown, they are regarded as some kind of alternative, esoteric, unproven treatment.
“Our goal was to identify a biological mechanism of action of probiotics, a mechanism that makes sense to traditional scientists, hoping that this will make probiotics a mainstream treatment.”
