Pregnant women urged to ensure they are vaccinated against measles amid outbreak across Europe
The Royal College of Nursing has urged pregnant women who are travelling throughout European countries to make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations against measles before they travel, as unusually high rates of the disease have recently been experienced in France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Serbia and Romania.
According to data released by Public Health England, the disease is also on the rise within the UK as so far this year, there have been 781 confirmed cases, compared to only 274 throughout the whole of 2017.
With previous research linking measles to premature labours, miscarriages and stillbirths, midwifery staff at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust are advising pregnant women to ensure they are up to date with their jabs.
The Trust’s head of midwifery Janet Cairns, said “Now is the time to check if you are vaccinated against measles.
“If you are pregnant and have been in contact with someone with measles, please contact your GP or midwife.”
