Possible cure on horizon for pancreatic cancer through ‘very promising’ drug
Scientists have discovered a new drug, which has ‘potentially very promising results’ for pancreatic cancer.
In recent trials, mice with the disease were cured after being treated with medication that uses their immune cells, known as white blood cells, to attack the cancer cells, by taking the white cells and engineering them so that they multiply before reinfusing them into the mice. Similar treatment has also been affective in children with leukaemia.
Pancreatic cancer is often only diagnosed once it has spread to other parts of the body as the symptoms are so vague. It affects approximately one in every 71 people in the UK, only 20 per cent of sufferers live a year after diagnosis and only seven per cent survive for five years.
Professor Nick Lemoine from Barts Cancer Institute and study author, said “We have achieved what appears to be cures in the animal models, but this still remains early days. So far, all the signals look really positive.
“The news is that there is a potentially very promising therapy.”
The researchers are hopeful that the treatment could be trialled on humans by 2020.
