People at increased heart attack risk could be identified by one-off genetic test
A recent study has found that a one-off genetic test could detect people born with an increased risk of heart attack.
Furthermore, according to researchers involved in the study, the Genomic Risk Score (GRS) test could cost as little as £40, which would make it accessible for population-wide screening, and would likely take the form of a simple mouth swab.
Lead author of the study, Dr Michael Inouye of the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and University of Cambridge said that whilst around 50 per cent of coronary heart disease is down to genetics, the other half is environmental or lifestyle.
Dr Inouye said “We have been missing a genetic component in risk screenings, we’ve just been really in the dark about the genetic half.”
As coronary heart disease starts years before the development of symptoms, GRS is able to identify those at risk of the condition earlier, meaning that in theory children can be tested.
Dr Inouye went on to say “There is still a lot of work to be done” before the test is ready to be used within any formal health care system like the NHS.
