Online medical check-ups set to ‘transform’ healthcare
According to the clinical lead of a new digital scheme, online check-ups are set to ‘transform’ healthcare in Wales.
Over 80,000 video consultations have been performed in the country by GPs and other medical services since March, and now NHS Wales’ Video Consultation Service (VCS) will offer the technology to all pharmacists, dentists and optometrists.
Although the service was made necessary by Covid, VCS clinical lead Professor Alka Ahuja said it is here to stay.
She said “We don’t want to be going backwards. We have learnt how it works, we learnt what it does for our patients and we have learnt that it saves time to ravel and reduces the carbon footprint.”
The scheme is funded by a £50m Welsh Government digital priorities investment fund.
