Online chatroom Mumsnet called on to assist NHS in England in nursing recruitment drive

The NHS will seek the assistance of the online parenting chatroom as part of a package of measures to fill vacancies in the health service, viewing the website as an important partner to entice back nurses who have left the profession.

The plan is amongst a number of steps which were unveiled in the recent interim People Plan report, which has been commissioned by NHS Improvement, outlining the intention of recruiting an additional 40,000 nurses over the next five years.

Although the plan focuses primarily on those in the nursing profession, it also recognises that more doctors and support staff will also be needed.

NHS Improvement’s chair Dido Harding, said that there were clearly current ‘challenges’ with staff.

Baroness Harding went on to say “I want front-line NHS staff to know we have heard their concerns about the pressures they face and we are determined to address them.

“The NHS needs more staff. But that, on its own, is not enough.

“We need to change the way people work in the NHS and create a modern, caring and exciting workplace.”

The Royal College of Nursing’s Patricia Marquis, said “This document begins to tackle the real issues but many will reserve final judgement until funding levels and practical details are revealed.”
