Official figures highlight GP recruitment crisis
Official figures have shown that around 10,000 GPs, around 41 per cent, are aged 50 or over, and are predicted to leave the profession within the next five to ten years.
Although Jeremy Hunt has promised a £20,000 incentive for trainees in October, fewer young doctors are choosing general practice as a profession and are instead opting for surgical or specialist paths.
Many overstretched GPs are retiring in their 50s, leaving to work in the private sector or moving abroad, and practices are now considering closing their patient waiting lists until remedial action is taken.
Mr Hunt has pledged £2.4 billion to help plug the rising number of vacancies and the NHS has announced a plan to recruit an extra 5,000 GPs by 2021.
However, in the meantime, the continuing crisis with the overstretched health service has left patients at risk, with staff unable to cope with reduced funding and rising demand.
