NHS staff shortage a ‘national emergency’
Official figures have shown that vacancies within the NHS are worsening. One in 11 posts is vacant and the situation is worse among the nursing workforce.
This news comes after continuous efforts by NHS bosses to tackle the staff shortages, including new pay deals, and retention and recruitment campaigns.
The Royal College of Nursing’s Tom Sandford, said the report, published by NHS Improvement, painted a ‘bleak picture’, adding that nurse vacancies had risen by 17 per cent over the last three months alone.
Chief analyst at the King’s Fund think tank Siva Anandaciva, said the nursing shortage was at risk of becoming a “national emergency”.
Head of NHS Providers Chris Hopson, said trusts were “most worried” about the news, particularly as the situation was starting to deteriorate. He added that the NHS was facing a “triple challenge” of rising demand, increasing workforce shortages and finance pressures.
The news comes as waiting time targets for planned operations and A&E appointments continue to be missed.
