NHS ‘poor’ on treatment of life-threatening illness
Independent analysis has revealed that the NHS lags behind other countries in the treatment of life-threatening illnesses, with the report saying the UK was a ‘below-average’ performer when it comes to preventing deaths from cancer, strokes and heart attacks.
However, the experts pointed out that the NHS does get less funding than the other 18 nations studied and said that there were some ‘definite strengths’ in the service, including being relatively efficient and providing ‘unusually good financial protection’ from the outcomes of ill-health.
Chief executive of the Nuffield Trust think tank, Nigel Edwards, said “We run a health system with very scarce resources in terms of staff and equipment and achieve poor outcomes in some vital areas like cancer survival.”
The Nuffield Trust has worked with experts at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, Health Foundation and the Kings’s Fund to look into key issues facing the NHS at the time of it’s 70th birthday.
