NHS offers soup-and-shake weight loss plan to fight type 2 diabetes
Thousands more type 2 diabetes patients in England are to be offered the chance to try a soup-and-shake diet weight loss plan free of charge through the NHS.
Studies have shown that changing to the low-calorie liquid diet can send diabetes into remission.
There is a proven link between type 2 diabetes and obesity, and both increase the risk of complications from Covid-19.
Some patients have benefited already from the year-long diet and exercise plan, which is the reason NHS England are expanding to scheme, to include people diagnosed with the condition in the last six years.
After a period of a few months on the soups and shakes, when some loss of weight has been achieved, solid foods are gradually reintroduced, with additional support to help the patient to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Professor Jonathan Valabhji, NHS national clinical director for diabetes and obesity, said “This is the latest example of how the NHS, through our Long Term Plan, is rapidly adopting the latest evidence-based treatments to help people stay well, maintain a healthy weight and avoid major diseases.
“There has never been a more important time to lose weight and put their type 2 diabetes into remission, so it’s good news for thousands of people across the country that practical, supportive measures like this are increasingly available on the NHS.”
