NHS admit to using wrong metal plates in fracture repair surgery
Seven cases of the wrong metal plates being inserted into patients during surgery to repair fractures have been identified at an unnamed trust.
The patients had flexible plates intended for reconstruction inserted instead of rigid plates meant for fractures.
One patient fell following surgery and the plate buckled, meaning they had to undergo further surgery to correct the problem. Another patient required further surgery after their plate failed while undertaking post-op physiotherapy.
NHS Improvement are concerned that the same mistake may have been made elsewhere and are asking hospitals to review the x-rays of patients treated with metal plates for fractures over the last twelve months, meaning that around 5,500 cases are likely to be checked.
Dr Aiden Fowler, National Director for Patient Safety, said “Patients should not be alarmed and do not need to take any action themselves. The risk of harm is low and their local hospital will contact them if there is a chance that they may have been affected.”
