Maternity services at Worcestershire hospital told to improve
Maternity services at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital have been told to make improvements following concerns raised by a number of whistleblowers.
Following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission in December last year, inspectors reported that morale amongst staff was low, staff said they did not think their concerns were listened to, and staffing levels were lower than planned.
The inspection team said it had been concerned about maternity services at the hospital after it had was contacted by four whistleblowers between July and September about patient safety in the department.
It said staff did not always feel supported by managers, not all safety incidents were reported, and not all staff were up to date with training. Midwives had also told them the service was always short-staffed and they often moved within the department.
Chief inspector of the CQC Ted Baker, said following the inspection “Staff should never feel that their concerns are not listened to and we are pleased service managers have initiated meetings to listen to staff with a view to taking action in the problem areas.”
The trust has been told it must make improvements, which include monitoring staffing levels, listening to staff, and learning from all incidents.
Vicky Morris, chief nursing officer at the trust, said changes had already started before the inspection over the staffing issues, adding “We have run a very successful recruitment campaign for midwives and once the next round of recruitment is completed next week, we should have filled all our vacancies and recruited an additional ten midwives.”
