‘Liquid health check’ may predict chances of getting diseases including type 2 diabetes
Scientists at the universities of Cambridge and California have created the health test, which searches through blood for proteins released by damaged cells or the immune system.
The researchers trialled the experimental test on close to 17,000 people.
Results of the trial showed it could pinpoint people with poor kidney function, fat deposits around their organs, and those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The test, which is still in the early stages, was however less accurate at detecting risks of cardiovascular events, such as stroke or heart attack.
Academics were hopeful that it could be rolled out across the NHS within the next few years, adding that it could be carried out alongside the NHS Health Check which is routinely offered to people aged between 40 to 74 every five years.
Dr Claudia Langenbert of the University of Cambridge, said “Proteins circulating in our blood are a manifestation of our genetic make-up as well as many other factors, such as behaviours or the presence of disease, even if not yet diagnosed.
“This is one of the reasons why proteins are such good indicators of our current and future health state and have the potential to improve clinical prediction across different and diverse diseases.”
