Leading supplier stockpiling insulin in case of Brexit disruption
Britain’s main insulin manufacturer is stockpiling four months’ supply of the medicine amid warnings the UK will run out if there is no deal, building up the reserve by January of next year.
An estimated 4.6 million diabetes sufferers in the UK rely on insulin to stay healthy.
Manufacturer Novo Nordisk of Denmark supplies over 50 per cent of insulin in the UK and their supplier has revealed that it is importing enough to last four months, saying that they were committed to ensuring patients’ health would not be affected by Brexit.
This move has come weeks after the warning that the health of millions of diabetic sufferers could be at risk if Brexit bought about an insulin shortage.
Pinder Sahota, the supplier’s UK vice president, said “Our first commitment is to ensure that patients treated with our medicines remain unaffected in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
“Our decision to increase stock is in line with the technical notices and guidance published by the government to industry.”
Diabetes UK’ head of care Dan Howarth, said “This further commitment from Novo Nordisk will no doubt reassure those people with diabetes who rely on the insulin this company produces.
“Insulin and other diabetic medication aren’t optional extras for the millions of people in the UK who rely on them.
“It’s incredibly important that the companies involved in their production and distribution, and those involved in guaranteeing their entry into the UK, work together so that supply continues uninterrupted.”
