Kent and Medway review into patient harm following DMC Healthcare ‘failure’
NHS bosses are investigating at least eighteen serious cases after GP and dermatology services were stripped from the private medical company.
The Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) confirmed earlier this week that an independent review would take place, to see if treatment for thousands of patients using DMC Healthcare services “caused harm”.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service said that DMC had been responsible for up to 60,000 patients at nine surgeries in the region, and skin condition services in other parts of Kent.
David Wildey, chairman of Medway Council’s health scrutiny committee, said the decision to allow DMC to take control of key health services was a “total failure”.
Kent and Medway CCG’s Nikki Teesdale, said it was “too early” to reach definitive conclusions around the 18 serious cases.
Speaking to the joint health scrutiny committee on Monday, she said that of the 18, five had been waiting “significant periods of time” for cancer services.
“Until we have got those patients through those treatment programmes, we are not able to determine what the level of harm has been.”
Ms Teesdale admitted that the service had gone “significantly wrong” but committee that the CCG were satisfied with the emergency contractor.
