Jeremy Hunt denies problems within the NHS are caused by austerity
The Health Secretary has defended the Government’s record on the health service and has denied that austerity is driving problems within the NHS.
He said that a claim by an SNP MP that that the NHS was going through an “austerity-driven crisis” was inaccurate.
During health questions in the House of Commons, Mr Hunt said “I do think it’s stretching it a bit to call this an austerity driven problem when we’re putting next year the sixth biggest increase in funding for the NHS in its entire 70-year history.”
The Government says it has protected the NHS budget and last year a £3.8bn cash injection was unveiled to head of an NHS winter crisis.
Rises in spend, which are to be expected for health services under inflationary and demographic pressure, appear to be falling behind increases in cost and demand, and in terms of health service spending, the UK is currently in the bottom half of internationally comparable countries.
