Hospital targets worsen across UK
Recent research has shown that hospital targets for planned operations, four hour A&E waits and 62 day cancer care are worsening and that Northern Ireland, Wales and England have not met any of their key targets for 18 months.
Within the last four years, the chances of not being seen in four hours in Accident & Emergency have doubled, with nearly 10 per cent of patients waiting longer than the target time.
The number of patients waiting longer than 62 days for cancer treatment has risen by a third in the last four years with nearly one in five patients now waiting longer.
Dr Chaand Nagpaul, chair or the British Medical Association, said the situation was “unacceptable” and that for many patients the delays would have a “real impact on their treatment and outcome”.
Saffron Cordery of NHS Providers, said “It’s time for an honest debate about what we can realistically expect the health service to deliver in such difficult circumstances.”
