Government appoints expert to head up infection control at Glasgow hospital
An expert has been appointed to oversee infection control and prevention at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.
The health board was recently placed in special measures due to ongoing concerns surrounding infection control and following the deaths of two children at the Royal Hospital for Children, which is part of the hospital’s campus, in 2017.
Scottish health secretary, Jeane Freeman, said that there had been an increase in certain infections at the hospital between 2017 and 2019, but insisted that infection rates were now returning to normal. She did however add that a full review of all relevant cases from 2015 onwards would be carried out.
In a recent statement, she said “Families deserve confidence in their services and deserve answers. I have outlined a significant level of intervention within the operation of the QEUH to ensure these issues are dealt with thoroughly and quickly.”
The new appointee, Professor Marion Bain, who is a former medical director at NHS National Services Scotland, will be assisted by a senior clinician in infection prevention and control.
