IT glitch sees 44,000 patients affected by lost medical records
An IT glitch, which has affected around 2,500 GP practices, has lost crucial medical information, including vaccine uptake, pathology results and read codes, relating to over 44,000 patients.
The problem has arisen from an issue with retrieving the medical records of patients who have left and are returning to a practice.
GPs at the affected practices will now need to review records to ensure their patient information is up to date, this coming at a time when GPs have warned that they are already overstretched by a surge in demand over the winter.
The BMA’s GP committee newsletter has stated that the glitch has affected patients on a SystmOne practice and that two other systems, Vision and Microtest have remained unaffected.
NHS Digital is currently reviewing the situation, and the GPC have said that so far there have been ‘no reported safety incidents’.
