Gene sequencing project brings hope of faster disease diagnosis
Cambridge scientists have finalised the world’s biggest healthcare gene sequencing project, bringing hope of a clearer understanding of diseases and faster diagnosis.
People who took part in the trial included cancer patients and patients with rare diseases and their family members. One in four of the participants received a diagnosis for the first time.
Genomics England have described the project as “transformational in what it means to society and humanity”.
Up until the project, parents of children with rare genetic conditions have spent typically years attempting to find the cause. This trial, named The 100,000 Genomes Project, has brought this to an end for many of the families and in some cases has led to effective treatments.
Rare diseases and cancer were chosen for the trial due to both conditions being strongly linked to DNA changes in the body. Cancer is triggered by gene mutations and the majority of rare diseases are also brought about by genome errors..
Around 50 per cent of the cancer patients that took part in the project went on to receive targeted treatment or take part in a clinical trial.
Chief scientist at Genomics England Professor Mark Caulfield, said “The sequencing of 100,000 whole genomes marks an extraordinary UK achievement that is transforming the application of genomics in our NHS.”
It is hoped that this will lead to faster diagnosis, an improved prevention of illness and more targeted medicines.
