Frustration grows for Calderdale residents trying to access their GP during pandemic
Health chiefs have heard that getting to see their GP or attempting to access related services has become a frustrating issue for Calderdale residents during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Members of Calderdale Council Health and Wellbeing Board held a meeting to discuss the effect the pandemic has had on local services, including accessing GPs, using technology to contact their GPs and health teams remotely, and many surgeries not opening as normal.
Although technology is playing an increasing role in accessing services and it has provided a way of contact during the pandemic, it does not work for all patients and members of the board recognised that accessing care and GPs in the current circumstances does need improvement.
Coun Megan Swift (Lab, Town) said patients might be informed that accessing GPs was working well, but it was a complicated process, adding “We are not always keeping things simple for people.
“The more we can support that and make processes simple for the people out there, the more it will help.”
Dr Steven Cleasby, chair of Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group, said “The main challenge is it just feels very different for the public and patients about how to move around the system, ‘how do I access a doctor’, ‘is care available’, and so on.”
