Flu jabs limited due to increased demand
GP surgeries and pharmacies are being forced to limit flu jabs to the most at-risk groups of patients due to an increase in demand.
In addition, the Boots chain has postponed its appointment booking system for anyone outside of the vulnerable groups, including people aged over 65.
This year, the government say up to 30 million people can be vaccinated in England, with vaccines delivered in batches to GPs and pharmacies and priority given to the most at-risk groups.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care, said “Delivery of flu vaccinations is phased over the autumn and into winter, and priority is rightly given to those who are most at-risk with others being asked to wait to later in the year.”
Chair of the Royal College of GPs, Professor Martin Marshall, said widespread flu vaccination would play a crucial role in preventing the NHS being overwhelmed this winter.
He added that the government must ensure there is a “adequate supply of vaccines for everyone who wants one” among patients who are now eligible, and asked for guidance on who should be prioritised for the flu jab if supplies became limited.
