Failure to treat high blood pressure may lead to thousands of unnecessary deaths
Researchers from The British Heart Foundation have warned that failures to adequately treat patients with high blood pressure could see an estimated 115,000 people die unnecessarily from strokes and heart attacks every year over the next decade, adding that the situation could be prevented by an improvement in diagnosis and treatment.
An increase in obesity levels amongst the population in the UK has raised the likelihood of developing type-2 diabetes. There are also an estimated 13.7 million adults in England currently living with high blood pressure, with around 5.7 million of these cases being undiagnosed, along with raised cholesterol.
The charity has further warned that these factors could result in rising levels of strokes and heart attacks, reversing the advances that had been made over recent years, and have called for improved access for the NHS to cutting edge treatments, a reinvigorated approach to rehabilitation services, and utilization of technology and data science.
Chief executive of the British Heart Foundation, Simon Gillespie, said “Unless we change our approach, thousands of lives could be lost.”
