England’s chief midwife urges pregnant women to get Covid jab as majority unvaccinated
Estimates based on Public Health England data and GP records suggest hundreds of thousands of pregnant women have not had the jab, as the number of mums-to-be in hospital with the virus rises.
In the last twelve weeks, 171 pregnant women with the virus needed hospital treatment, but none had received both jabs.
In a letter to obstetricians, GP practices and midwives, Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent, chief midwife for England, says all healthcare professionals have “a responsibly to proactively encourage pregnant women” to get vaccinated, and recommends advice on jabs be offered at every opportunity.
She went on to say “Vaccines save lives, and this is another stark reminder that the Covid-19 jab can keep you, your baby and your loved ones, safe and out of hospital.”
Public Health England data suggests that around 51,724 pregnant women in England have so far received one Covid vaccine. Of these, around 20,648 have received their second dose. This is out of around 606,500 pregnant women in England, based on estimates from GP records.
Dr Edward Morris, president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said very sick pregnant women with Covid-19 were being admitted to hospital every day, most of whom were unvaccinated.
He went on to say “One dose of Covid-19 vaccination gives good protection against infection, so the sooner you can book your first appointment the better.
“You can have your second dose eight weeks after your first, which will provide a good level of immunity against the Delta variant.”
