Delays leaving cancer patients at risk
An analysis of official figures has found that one in six patients is waiting longer than the 62 day target of cancer being suspected, with England last hitting this target in December 2015.
MacMillan Cancer Support’s Fran Woodard, said the state of affairs was “extremely dispiriting”.
She went on to say “Long waits to start cancer treatment can make an already difficult time even more distressing and unbearable, while also raising the possibility of someone’s health deteriorating further.”
The cancer system is facing similar pressures as those experienced in Accident & Emergency and routine operations.
A growing shortage of staff, with problems reported in recruiting chemotherapy nurses and oncology doctors in particular, is a significant concern, and bottlenecks in diagnostics tests have also been reported.
