Covid-19 could become much more treatable in the next six to eighteen months, according to head of NHS
Sir Simon Stevens, chief executive of the NHS, has said that Covid-19 could become a “much more treatable disease in the next six to 18 months”, telling MPs that he hoped more treatments would emerge in the future which, together with the vaccination, would see a turn for the better.
He spoke of the prospect of a “much more normal future” due to the development of potential new treatments in the works, but added that vaccination would be crucial in the first half of this year.
Speaking to the Health and Social Care Committee, he said “The first half of the year, vaccination is going to be crucial. I think a lot of us in the health service are increasingly hopeful that the second half of the year and beyond we will also see more therapeutics and more treatments for coronavirus.
“I think it is possible that over the course of the next six to 18 months, coronavirus becomes a much more treatable disease with antivirals and other therapies, which alongside the vaccination programme holds out the hope of a return to a much more normal future.”
He went on to say that the vaccines were being used as fast as they arrive in the NHS, and over half of people aged between 75 and 79 have now been given their first dose.
When asked about vaccine priority, he said that police officers, teachers and people with learning disabilities would need to be considered for the next round of vaccinations and suggested that this should happen as early as February.
