Contaminated blood scandal victims welcome increase in financial support
Victims in Northern Ireland of the contaminated blood scandal have welcomed an increase in financial support to them.
Previously, Northern Ireland victims have received less than those in Scotland, England and Wales.
Now, NI’s Health Minister Robin Swann, has confirmed an increase in annual payments from £18,745 to just under £45,000, which will bring them in line with payments made in England, which were significantly increased in April last year.
The contaminated blood scandal was a result of haemophilia patients being treated with blood infected with HIV or Hepatitis C in the 1970s and 1980s.
Around 5,000 patients, including 99 from Northern Ireland, were infected in what has been named “the worst scandal in the history of the NHS.”
