Complacency warning over UK flu jab rates
Experts are warning that complacency over the flu jab risks overwhelming the NHS, as data reveals the scale of the challenge in expending the vaccination programme.
Although the government announced last month their plans to double the number of people who receive the vaccination, analysis has found that the take-up rate among people in vulnerable categories eligible for the free jab has declined.
Public Health England say the vaccination, which has in recent years been freely available to the over 65s, pregnant women and patients with long running health conditions, among others, is the most effective way to lessen pressures on intensive care units.
Health secretary Matt Hancock said he did not want an outbreak of flue “at the sae time as dealing with coronavirus.”
He went on to say “We have bought more flu vaccine than ever before. In fact we have changed the law so that more people can administer the jab We want pharmacists, nurses and GPs to be able to administer the jab.”
Dr Tonia Thomas of the Vaccine Knowledge Trust at the University of Oxford, said “People think the flu is not that bad, that is even for people who are in the risk groups.
“They are leading healthy lives in terms of day-to-day living. I have spoken to patients who say they forgot they are in a risk group. It is only when they contract an infection that they realise their body responds differently to other people’s.”
