Cerebral Palsy Children Have Improved Hand Function Following Play Therapy Combined with Physiotherapy
Impairment of hand function causes very significant disability in children with spastic cerebral palsy, to the extent that they often cannot use their hands at all and do not learn to deal with most tasks involving the hands.
A Study involving groups of children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy has found that the group of children treated with a combination of play therapy along with conventional physiotherapy scored significantly higher in certain hand grasp and release tests than those treated with conventional physiotherapy alone. This indicates that a combination of these therapies is much more effective in improving hand function in children with this type of cerebral palsy.(Buddhadey DNP, Arya DB. Effectiveness of Play Therapy over Conventional Physiotherapy in Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy Children NJIRM, 2012; 3(2):159-162). Play therapy has also been found to be beneficial in the development of hand-to-eye co-ordination, as well as fine and gross motor skills.
