CDC step up advice for pregnant women to have Covid vaccine, finding no increased miscarriage risk
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have urged all pregnant women to have the Covid-19 vaccine as hospitals in hot spots around the US see alarming numbers of unvaccinated mothers-to-be seriously ill with the virus.
According to CDC data, expectant mothers run an increased risk of severe illness and pregnancy complications from the virus, including the possibility of miscarriage and stillbirth. But vaccination rates remain low, with only 23 per cent having received at least one dose.
In a recent statement, Dr Rochelle Walensky, CDC director, said “The vaccines are safe and effective, and it has never been more urgent to increase vaccinations as we face the highly transmissible delta variant and see severe outcomes from Covid-19 among unvaccinated pregnant people.”
The new guidance comes following an analysis of new safety data on 2,500 women showed no increased risks of miscarriage for those who received at least one dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine before 20 weeks of pregnancy. The analysis found a rate of miscarriage of around 13 per cent, within the normal range.
The advice from the CDC echoes recent recommendations from top obstetrician groups. The agency had previously encouraged pregnant women to consider vaccination, but had stopped short of a full recommendation.
