Cancer Research UK reports on rise in cancer cases
According to the charity, there are currently over 352,000 patients being diagnosed with cancer, which is a 12% increase in the rate over the last 20 years.
Although experts do say that the rise in diagnoses is in the main linked to the UK’s growing and ageing population, the charity has warned that the survival rates of some cancers are still too low, despite more accurate tests and better treatments on offer.
Pancreatic, lung and oesophageal cancers are often diagnosed at a late stage when they are harder to treat, and more needs to be done to tackle the survival rates.
Head of statistical information at Cancer Research UK, Nick Ormiston-Smith, said “People are living longer so more people are getting cancer, but the good news is more people are surviving their cancer.
“There is still a huge variation in survival between different cancer types and there’s a lot of work to do to reach Cancer Research UK’s ambition for three in four patients to survive their disease by 2034.”
The charity’s Prof Peter Johnson added “People often think cancer is down to their genes or just bad luck.
“Although genes do play a role, there are still many things people can do to reduce their cancer risk.
“The most import is not to smoke. Most people know smoking causes lung cancer, but it is also linked to at least 13 other types.
“We also know that maintaining a healthy body weight, exercising and eating a healthy balanced diet is important.”
