Budget results show NHS spending will face cuts as well as gains
Although the chancellor announced overall annual funding increases for NHS England, in other areas of health, according to a think tank, spending will fall in the year 2019-20.
The Health Foundation investigated the Budget papers and has stated that, though the day to day running costs of the NHS will rise by just under £4bn next year, there will be a reduction of £1bn in other areas of the budget.
Chairwoman of the Health Select Committee Sarah Wollaston, has responded by saying that any further cuts would be unacceptable: “We cannot see money transferred from other parts of the Budget such as public health or training budgets to fund NHS England rises.
“This would have serious consequences and undermine the commitments made to the NHS this summer.”
The Health Foundation’s Anita Charlesworth, said “If the government wants to avoid further cuts to education and public health, it will need to shift all of the planned capital growth to day-to-day resource budgets.”
A government source said that the Budget figures did not include income sources, such as immigrant surcharges, which could be passed on to public health areas.
Historically, health budgets have been boosted by money transferred from investment, also known as capital spending, and this could possibly happen next year.
