Breast cancer relapse risk can be predicted by ‘internal wiring’
Researchers at the University of Cambridge and Stanford University have said that the ‘internal wiring’ of the disease can predict which women are more likely to relapse or recover.
It is hoped that the findings will be able to identify patients who need closer monitoring and reassure those who are at low risk of recurrence.
The study further showed that breast cancer is eleven distinct diseases, each of which has a risk of returning.
The research team identified four subgroups of breast cancer that were both driven by oestrogen and had a ‘markedly increased’ risk of returning. It is estimated that 12,300 women each year in the UK have such types of cancer.
Professor Carlos Caldas, one of the researchers involved in the study, said “This is really biology-driven, it’s the molecular wiring of your tumour.
“Once and for all we need to stop talking about breast cancer as one disease, it’s a constellation of eleven diseases.
“This is a very significant step to more precision-type medicine.”
Chief scientist of Cancer Research UK Professor Karen Vousden, said “We’sre still a way off being able to offer this type of detailed molecular testing to all women and we need more research to understand how we can tailor treatments to a patient’s individual tumour biology.
“But this is incredibly encouraging progress.”
